Ah Lim Chicken Rice's chicken rice onigiri will impress your guests with its fragrant and delicious chicken rice balls served up as adorable chickens.
I first came across Ah Lim Chicken Rice's chicken rice onigiri when a fellow parent shared his order on Instagram. I remembered thinking the onigiris shaped like cute chickens were so adorable. I only ordered them recently when I came across pics on IG again, showed them to my younger one and she was like, "So cute! Please order this!". And I'm glad I did because everyone at home enjoyed these special chicken rice and were duly impressed.
If you don't already know, Ah Lim Chicken Rice opened its chicken rice stall in Bedok in 2023 but closed at the beginning of 2024 because of rising operational costs and challenging footfall at the coffee shop the stall is located in. The good thing is they are still selling their chicken rice onigiri online.
There are 2 options at its online store: Chicken Rice Onigiri Party Pack ($72) & Ultimate Hawker Party Pack (S$88). I opted for the latter which includes: 4 original chicken rice onigiris; 4 nasi lemak onigiris; 4 chicken rice laksa onigiris; 15 spicy quail eggs; achar; chicken rice chili; dark soy sauce; a pack of seaweed. (I had asked to switch the spicy quail eggs to the non-spicy braised ones and they had kindly accommodated.) I also added 6 original chicken rice onigiri at $30 (or you can add 3 extras at $15). Ginger sauce is at an extra of $3, which I didn't get.
Here's how our Ultimate Hawker Party Pack plus 6 original chicken rice onigiri looked like when they arrive. The presentation looks very nice.
You can really see the effort put into shaping them into chickens. Look at the chicken combs, eyes, beaks and wattles!
The party pack also came with sushi serving plates, which made presentation on the table even prettier. If you're having a party, these onigiris will surely impress your guests!
The Chicken Rice Onigiri Party Pack consists of: 12 original chicken rice onigiris; 15 quail eggs braised in specialty sauce; chicken rice chili sauce; dark soy sauce; achar or kimchi.
Honestly, at the beginning I had wondered if this was more of a novelty and if they would taste as good as they look but I'm happy to say, they are really good. The rice was very fragrant and the meat wrapped inside the onigiri was plenty and tender.
Everyone also enjoyed the nasi lemak onigiri which came with egg and luncheon meat in them (the lighter colour four piece on the sushi plate), and the chicken rice laksa onigiri (the darker colour four piece on the sushi plate). The latter had a bit of spice but it was pretty mild.
Our favourite is still the original chicken rice onigiri but it's good to have the other two flavours for variety. We also like the braised quail eggs, which is soft, not over-cooked and has the salty braised flavour to it. Achar was nice as well, crunchy and with the right amount of spice.
If you're wondering how many onigiri per person to budget. According to Ah Lim Chicken Rice, each party pack can feed 5-6 people. We budgeted 2 onigiri per person and it was enough to go around, but we did have two more home prepared side dishes to go with our meal.
You can opt for delivery or self pick-up but the date and timing are quite limited. So do order ahead; we ordered 2 weeks ahead to secure our preferred delivery time slot. You can choose to pick up at Canberra MRT, which is free, or opt for delivery. Delivery charges depend on location. We're in the northeast and delivery came to $13.10.
BTW I thought the sticker with my name on the delivery bag was a really nice touch. We'll definitely order again in the future!
