You'll find yourself rooting for Finding Phoebe's neurodiverse protagonist who is witty and full of heart.
Young adult book recommendation – Finding Phoebe by Gavin Extence 😎 Phoebe, who is autistic, is happy staying in her comfort zone: taking her dog for walks, writing her fantasy stories and limiting her social interactions. But when her best friend, Bethany, gets a boyfriend and Phoebe has to cover for her, our protagonist is plunged into a whole load of drama that forces her to step out of her comfort zone and tackle head-on the curveball life throws at her.
This story draws you into Phoebe’s world as she navigates high school as a neurodiverse individual. In the author’s note, Extence shared that he had written the story for his daughter who is autistic. “Being a teenager is tough for anyone, but it can be especially tough for autistic girls. It’s the time when social dynamics change, when hormones kick in, when relationships with friends and parents become more complicated – when in life, in general, become more complicated.”
Finding Phoebe also touches on heavier issues like teenage pregnancy and extramarital affairs, and offers a few important life and friendship lessons. “But one of the things I’ve learned in the past year is that you can’t have a concrete plan for everything. Sometimes, you have to try different things to see what fits. Sometimes, life is messy, and you have to work through it, one day at a time.”
This story will have you rooting for Phoebe who is witty and full of heart. I’d recommend this book to teenagers and those older. Thank you, Definitely Books (Pansing), for sending this awesome read over! You can find this book in all good bookstores!
