Kill Joy Holly Jackson collector's edition review

Kill Joy by Holly Jackson marks the beginning of Pip Fitz-Amobi’s story, set before the events of the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy. In this prequel, Pip and her friends participate in a 1920s-themed murder mystery party, where they must deduce the murderer among them. This event ultimately inspires Pip to investigate the murder of Andie Bell in the first book of the trilogy.

This young adult novella offers a delightful glimpse into Pip’s early investigative skills as she strives to solve the game’s mystery before her friends. The game itself is engaging, with palpable tension as the characters immerse themselves in their roles.

However, the dual narrative—Pip and her friends playing the game and the mystery within the game—can be a bit confusing, requiring readers to keep track of both the real and game characters. Despite this, the mystery remains enjoyable, and it’s heartwarming to see Pip and her friends in happier times.

While Kill Joy can be read as a standalone, I think reading it after finishing A Good Girl's to Murder trilogy would give you a better appreciation of this story. Thank you Definitely Books Kids (Pansing) for this beautiful hardback with sprayed edges. Kill Joy (Collector’s Edition) by Holly Jackson is now available at all good bookstores.
