Pineapple, Let's Roll! written by Peh Shing Huei and illustrated by Quek Hong Shin is an adorable picture book with important messages, including not judging others by their appearances.
Pineapple, Let's Roll! written by Peh Shing Huei and illustrated by Quek Hong Shin is a story about Ong Lai, who is made fun of in school because of his spiky hair and strange eyes, and he feels like a nobody. One day, his school runs a head prefect election and his only friend Jambu Jane encourages him to run for the election: "Show the whole school that everyone can be somebody. Tell every student that no one should be bullied, no should be left behind, no one should be ignored. It's all about respect."
Ong Lai's journey to becoming a head prefect is a wonderful story offering valuable lessons for children, including not judging people by appearances, and that we can all make a difference if we are willing to step up and try. Kids (and probably adults too!) will be tickled by the beautiful and vibrant illustrations, fruit names like Yuzu Yang and Kiwi Kamal, and election slogans of "Huat Ah!" 🍍
The author notes that the story is inspired by the 2023 Singapore Presidential Election where he was a member of Team Tharman during the campaign, making this picture book a great way to also teach young children about elections and what they entail.
