The Bravest Word by Kate Foster is a beautifully-written and touching story that explores a boy’s journey through depression and the courage it takes to seek help.
11-year-old Matt loves football and hanging out with his friends. But lately, he doesn’t feel the same enthusiasm he feels for the things he love. In fact, he is unhappy, irritable and overwhelmed by sad thoughts. He doesn’t know what’s happening to him, and hesitates to confide in his parents. That is until he and his dad finds an abandoned dog, and the decision to adopt the dog leads to Matt realising that maybe it’s not just the dog that needs help.
The Bravest Word by Kate Foster is a beautifully-written and touching story that explores a boy’s journey through depression and the courage it takes to seek help. Depression can affect both children and adults, and especially in our age of constant internet and social media exposure - where we feel pressured as we are bombarded by stressors - books that address heavy and sensitive issues subtly yet effectively are essential.
Mental health is gaining more attention these days, but it's often misunderstood and for some, there is still a stigma attached to it and embarassing to discuss. However, as the author notes at the end of the book: “Being afraid is OK. Bravery is acting despite your fear. And asking for help is bravery in its purest, most vulnerable form.”
I highly recommend this books for those aged 9 years and above. Thank you Definitely Books Kids (Pansing) for sending this lovely read over. This book is now available at all good bookstores.
