The Night Ends With Fire is an exciting adult retelling of Mulan with a feisty protagonist who holds her own in a war, while making a stand against patriarchy.
Hai Meilin has an oppressive and opium addict of a father who wants her to wed for dowry to repay his debts. When Meilin discovers that her husband-to-be is a violent man, she disguises herself as her father’s illegitimate son and enlists in the army to escape her fate.
Meilin has to conceal her identity as a woman and that she’s also a spirit medium, who wields the power of a green dragon. Meilin must fight in the Three Kingdoms’ war, as well as for her own freedom, while supernatural forces that could destroy her and her home loom.
If you think The Night Ends with Fire by K X Song, sounds familiar, it is an adult fantasy retelling of Mulan. But don’t go expecting it like the Disney story with endearing characters and a fairy tale ending (there’s a sequel, so at least not yet?). This version has a feisty protagonist I rooted for - she holds her own in the war, while making a stand against patriarchy and the moulds women are placed in. The supernatural aspects and a love triangle also gave this retelling a fresh and interesting spin. I enjoyed this very much and can't wait for its sequel 💪🏽
